New Delhi, January 18: The Lok Gathbandhan Party (LGP) expressing concern over the prevailing controversy over Supreme Court’s Collegium decision to appoint two new judges to the top court, said more corrective measures are required to ensure transparency in the selection process. The LGP said unsavoury row over the appointment of new judges is not at all in the interest of the judiciary and vibrant democracy.

The spokesman of the party said here on Friday that in view of the present situation the apex court should itself initiate further reform in collegium system so that no one could raise objection over its selection process. The spokesman said the way January 5-6 decision of collegium scrapping December 12 decision and appointing two new judges had been criticised is not a healthy development. The spokesman said transparency in the functioning of the courts is vital point because in the fair justice delivery system justice should not only done but also seen to be done. Laying stress on putting the issue to rest, the spokesman said charges about the integrity and the functioning of the collegium are quite disturbing and urgently needed to be amicably resolved.

The spokesman said the CJI must lead the resolution and such sensitive issue should not linger on in the public domain for a long time. The spokesman said this is an issue connected with the country’s most respected institution- and one in which Indians have tremendous trust, therefore it would be good for the judicial system to take initiative to settle the issue. The spokesman further said the development is bound to have its repercussions at the lower level of the judicial system, as simmering discontent about the functioning at various level were often surfaced in public domain. The spokesman said the issue has thus provided an opportunity to both the apex court and the union government on the transparent appointment of the judges. The spokesman said four senior judges of the Supreme Court had raised certain issues at a press conference in January 2018 highlighting troubling matter connected with functioning of the apex court. Thus it is time to look into whole gamut of the problems and settle it for ever.
