Lucknow, November 12: Director Jai Clinic and Diabetes Care Centre Dr A.K. Tewari has been awarded this year’s Diabetes Care Excellence Award 2019 at annual RSSDI Conference by prestigious Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) in Jaipur on November 7, 2019.
Dr Tewari is the only representative from Uttar pradesh to receive this prestigious award in recognition of his services in the field of diabetes treatment and awareness. Earlier he has also been awarded with Diabetes India Awareness Award 2017.
In The last decade, diabetes has moved from 14th leading cause of death globally to 10th position, India is on the top of 5 countries with highest number of deaths from Diabetes and this death rate has an exponential growth to the tune of 1.6%.(JAMA 2019)
Expressing concern over prevailing condition, Dr Tewari said 61.3 million people were suffering from diabetes in India, which is second only to China and the prevalence rate was 6.7%. Dr Tewari further said 77.2 million people have pre-diabetes with prevalence rate of 10.3%. He said Indians become diabetic ten years earlier than their counterparts in the western countries. He said more than 40% of these prediabetic, will convert in to frank diabetes in next five years.
Pointing out that it has placed massive financial pressure on the country, Dr Tewari stated that annual cost due to diabetes was Rs 38 billion in 2011, which has since then gone up further.
Dr Tewari said the theme of this year world diabetic day’s is “Family and Diabetes”. Children are the future of the nation ,he said good values inculcated during childhood will lead to healthy citizen of India. Dr Tewari said studies have confirmed that support from family, friends, promoted adherence to the treatment, optimism and self-esteem. Dr Tewari said obesity is the key risk factor in menacing rise of diabetes. He said “.when nobody runs in your family obesity runs in your family …., ”. He said exercise and balanced diet is key to keep you fit. Dr Tewari said American Diabetes Association has recommended at least 150 minutes of exercise per week. Earlier we used to say that “A family which eats together stays together”, but now it would be better to say that “a family which exercises together stays together”, he commented.
