New Delhi, January 08: The Lok Gathbandhan Party (LGP) today said that after utter failure on economic front and completely faltering in fulfilling its 2014 election promises the desperate Rafale-scam-tainted NDA government has resorted to provide 10% reservation to economically weaker upper castes in the country at the fag end of its tenure which is nothing but pre-poll gimmicks. The LGP said in the absence of government jobs, which have shrunk considerably over the years, the announcement is unlikely to benefit the targeted group.
The spokesman of the party said here on Tuesday the BJP had promised creation of jobs for youth in its 2014 election manifesto, but the growing disenchantment among younger generation indicates that the promise has been largely unfulfilled and now the BJP has offered another lollipop of reservation to economically weaker sector (EWS) in upper castes. The spokesman said looking back at the NDA performance the announcement is nothing but an attempt to mislead the poor people in the run up to the election. The spokesman pointed out that planned constitutional amendment for this purpose is unlikely to go through immediately as it required passage of amendment bills by two-thirds support of the both houses of parliament and ratification by 50% state assemblies. The spokesman thus questioning the hasty move said if the NDA government was so concerned about the poor people among upper castes, it should have taken the decision much earlier and ensure its implementation. The present move is simply out of political desperation, the spokesman said and added the NDA doesnot have time to implement it.
The spokesman said had the NDA government effectively performed on economic front it would have automatically helped in generation of employment opportunities for every section of the people. Moreover the spokesman recalled that similar attempt of the then PV Narasimha Rao government was frustrated by the Supreme Court in 1991. Because of the cap of 50% reservation limit by the apex court the recent demand for quotas to Marathas in Maharashtra and Patidars in Gujarat have also run into trouble, the spokesman said and added there is hardly any guarantee that the NDA government’s quota move will pass the judicial scrutiny. In view of 11 million job losses last year and economic situation under stress, the announcement is another election balloon, the spokesman commented.
