New Delhi, January 16: The Lok Gathbandhan Party (LGP) today said that worst price slump in agriculture production has landed the farming community in acute crisis in the country. The LGP said that the NDA government has totally failed to control the crisis as prices of agriculture productions have gone down and non-agriculture products have sharply registered upward trend thereby farmers while earning less are forces to spend more.
The spokesman of the party said here on Wednesday that according to report current financial year could end being the worst year for farm incomes in almost two decades. The spokesman said that wholesale price index (WPI) data for December indicated negative trend in primary food articles for six consecutive months beginning July 2018. This means food prices are falling, the spokesman said and added, falling farm-gate prices and rising non-farm prices indicated that farmers have suffered deterioration in their terms of trade. The spokesman said they are selling their products cheaper but having to buy other things at higher rates. The spokesman said the NDA government much-publicised claim of “doubling the income†of farmers has thus proved farce. The spokesman said except lip services and tokenism the central government has hardly done anything which could alleviate the suffering of farm sector.
The spokesman there is belated realization about revision in the rural wages under NREGS and finding ways to ensure MSPs to farmers. The spokesman said already an spree of loan waiving of farmers by several states has failed to yield positive result, as this appears to be an unending process and now there are moves to waive off electricity bills of farmers in BJP-ruled states. The spokesman said the NDA government except tall promises has done nothing to alleviate the sufferings of the farmers. Demanding overhauling of present agriculture policy to solve the problems of farmers, the spokesman said mere announcements without adequate ground framework the situation will not be resolved.
