Lucknow January 06: The Log Party, headed by former Secretary Government of India Vijay Shankar Pandey, today strongly condemned attack on students and vandalism on the campus in Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. The Log Party said the perpetrators of crime appeared to have mute support of the Delhi police.
The Log Party spokesman said here on Monday that in view of seriousness of the issue a high level judicial inquiry should be conducted in the sordid affairs. The spokesman said exactly three weeks after Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University became a battlefield over anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests, violence broke out at JNU on Sunday night as masked men armed with sticks attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus. The spokesman said at least 18 people, including JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Aishe Ghosh, were injured and admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. The spokesman said simmering discontent going on for quite sometime has led to violence in which Left-controlled students union has blamed ABVP goons for violence and vandalism. The spokesman said outbreak of violence is all the more serious in view of forthcoming Delhi assembly elections. The spokesman said the violence occurred while a public meeting by the JNU Teachers’ Association was ending. The hostel rooms, and lobbies were vandalised during the assault while several vehicles standing on roads were damaged by the unidentified miscreants. The spokesman said the campus has been on the boil for the last few months.
While a large section of JNU students have been taking part in anti-CAA protests in the Capital, earlier protests in October opposed a hostel fee hike and ‘anti student’ policies. The spokesman said immediate tight security measures should be taken to restore peace on the campus. The spokesman said anti-social elements should be identified for stern action. The Log Party has also demanded questionable role of the Delhi police in the case.
