New Delhi, September 27: The Lok Gathbandhan Party (LGP) today welcomed the landmark verdict of the Supreme Court in contentious Aadhaar case by restricting it to welfare schemes. The LGP said the controversial Aadhaar Act was unwieldy and growing dangerously because of the NDA government’s pressure to use it for every service.
The spokesman of the party said here on Thursday that unique Aadhaar identification had turned out to be more a menace and a threat to private life than a facilitator for public services. The spokesman said Aadhaar’s unrestrained use by the NDA government has finally come to an end with the apex court cutting it down to size. The spokesman said right from the beginning there was deep concern among the people over its use for banking, telecom and other commercial services, but the NDA government, unconcerned for the privacy of life, refused to listen to voice of sanity in the country and now the apex court has restored the fundamental right of the people. The spokesman said Aadhaar from being an enabling tool for empowerment had in fact become oppressing and surveillance tool to serve the political purpose of the NDA government. The spokesman said the questionable motive of the NDA government was exposed when it presented the proposed act as money bill in Parliament to hasten through the passage with the help of its brute majority and avoiding debate in the Rajya Sabha.
The spokesman said the government’s logic of tracking and tackling money laundering by linking bank accounts to Aadhaar did not deserve merit as those involved in massive corruption and loot have several other ways to escape the dragnet of the law. Criticising the NDA government for resorting to coercive method through various private and public agencies in its implementation, the spokesman said the apex court verdict has now ensured justice and fair play for the Indian people. The spokesman said stinging dissent verdict of Justice DY Chandrachud in the case has exposed that both previous UPA and NDA governments did not pay adequate and reasonable attention to the whole scheme before its implementation.
